The Fair Share Amendment is a proposal to amend the Massachusetts Constitution, creating an additional tax of four percentage points on the portion of a person’s annual income that is above $1 million. The new revenue generated by the tax would be spent on quality public education, affordable public colleges and universities, and the repair and maintenance of roads, bridges, and public transportation. To ensure that the tax continues to apply only to the highest-income taxpayers, the $1 million threshold would be adjusted each year to reflect cost-of-living increases.
A national charter school chain wants to open a 240-seat Wildflower Montessori Charter School in Haverhill. This would divert more than $1 million a year in taxpayer money to a privately run school when our own public schools are already underfunded and underresourced.

Currently the New Bedford Public Schools are already underfunded by $40.3 million annually, but the proposal could drain as much as $30 million more. These charter schools are not required to meet the needs of every student, and many are returned back to the public schools.
