Visions of Labor: Film Submission Deadline

The UMass Labor Center is seeking film and video submissions that have recorded worker actions and activities to be shown and utilized at, “Visions of Labor: Film and Worker Voices," an interactive conference on November 9-10, 2019. At the conference workers and activists will view new and classic labor films alongside digital stories and selected submissions at an event designed to engage with, and take action on, critical challenges connected to labor’s past, present and future. The selected submissions will also be featured on the Labor Center’s “Visions of Labor” website.

The Center particularly seeks works with footage that captures or recounts events relating to labor activities and ways in which worker voices are heard, including: workers coming together to take action, discussion and debate relating to workplace issues and actions, conflict resolution, strategy sessions, and all aspects and types of organizing. Videos do not have to be professionally produced; they can consist of footage taken by workers or others involved in workers’ stories. Any digital submissions by Western Massachusetts workers and submissions that cover events in this region will be of particular interest.

The Center does not view the selection process as a competition; criteria used for selection will be based on the ways in which the submissions relate to the project and can be used as educational and thought-provoking vehicles for the website and at the November 2019 event. Producers of the selected videos will be invited to attend the conference free of charge and to offer comments about their work and the story it tells.
All submissions must be received no later than May 10, 2019. Notification will be no later than August 1, 2019.

To submit, go to www.filmfreeway.com/visionsoflabor and follow submission instructions. There is no charge for submission.
Project organizers are available to answer any questions or provide more in-depth information about the range of scenarios that might be of interest. Kindly direct all questions to: visionsoflabor@gmail.com.

Visions of Labor: Film and Worker Voices is sponsored in part by a grants from Mass Humanities and the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Markham-Nathan Fund for Social Justice and the Five College Symposium Fund.
