Local Police Found Body Bearing Signs of Brutal Torture, Former Apparel Worker Had Received Numerous Death Threats & Been Detained & Tortured by Bangladeshi Security Services in 2010

WASHINGTON, April 9, 2012 -- A Bangladeshi labor rights activist and former apparel worker was tortured and murdered last week in Dhaka. His body was dumped outside of the capital city and was found by local police last Thursday.  According to the police report, Aminul Islam's body bore signs of brutal torture. Aminul's family, who had been searching for him since he disappeared last Wednesday, identified him on Saturday from photos appearing in local newspapers. Labor rights organizations in Bangladesh and the United States believe the killing is associated with Aminul's work on behalf of apparel workers who sew garments for suppliers to major U.S. retailers and brands.

Aminul had worked for several years as a labor rights organizer and advocate. His organization is among the most prominent labor rights groups in the country. Levi Strauss called BCWS "a globally respected labor rights organization that has played a vital role in documenting and working to remedy labor violations in the apparel industry in Bangladesh." The Bangladeshi Center for Worker Solidarity (BCWS) was featured in a recent ABC TV News story exposing the relationship of U.S.

Mayor and Civic Groups Press Federal Regulators to Reject Verizon Wireless’ Proposed Collusion with Cable Companies

Secretive Deal Would End Competition, Punish Consumers with Fewer Choices, Poor Service, Higher Prices for Cable and Online Service

Boston, MA-- Elected officials and advocates spoke out together in Boston on Tuesday to oppose a secretive new deal being cooked up by Verizon subsidiary Verizon Wireless and some of the nation’s biggest cable companies that would lead to higher prices, slower service, and fewer options for Boston Area consumers.  Mayor Thomas Menino, members of community groups, technology organizations, and faith leaders submitted briefs to the FCC on behalf of the community voicing their views.

Verizon Wireless, Comcast and Time Warner are attempting to create an unchecked monopoly to exclusively sell and market each other’s products.  This proposed corporate alliance—if approved by the FCC and the Department of Justice would limit competition, raise prices, kill jobs and lead more and more consumers to buy their cable, home phone, internet and cell phone service from a single monopoly provider.

Threatened Student Protest Over Basic Rights of BU Employees Moves Administrators to Change Position

In a surprising move last Wednesday, Boston University’s library administration reversed its position to deny Mugar Library security guards a drink of water on the job.  This reversal came just two days before a scheduled direct action by the Student Labor Action Project (SLAP) at Boston University and the University Organizing Project (UOP) of MA Jobs with Justice to protest the security guards’ conditions.

Chris Snook, president of UAW 2324, the union that represents the security guards, made the following statement: “We are excited to announce that we have reached a deal, and Mugar security guards are now permitted to keep any beverage with a lid at their stations. This is a victory for the workers as well as the student organizers who brought this issue to the attention of the entire campus.”

Workers Say Prominent Restaurant Owner investigated by Department of Labor for Violations Still Not Paying What They are Owed

PEABODY, MA – Calling on a local restaurateur Glaydes Coehlo to pay them wages they say that they are owed, workers will protest Monday in front of their former place of employment, the Firebull restaurant in Peabody Square. The workers will be joined by local labor and community supporters who will ask that Ms. Coehlo pay the workers the full back wages that they are still owed after the restaurant closed. She was previously investigated by the U.S. Labor Department for non-payment of wages.

“We, the ex-employees of Firebull Restaurant are asking for the justice and respect denied to us. We worked hard for our money and deserve to be paid. We have nothing against the owner but are incredibly hurt by her extreme disrespect and exploitation of us. For weeks she let us work, knowing full-well she would never pay us and was planning on closing the restaurant. The world needs to know what she did and that we the workers are not going to take it.” said the group of employees in a statement.
