Entergy offered its last best final offer on Tuesday night. Workers who are members of UWUA local 369 rejected it because it would have raised the cost of health care so high, they would be taking pay cuts and exposing themselves to outsourcing. Entergy’s greedy CEO Wayne Lenard was hoping that these workers would go out on strike immediately so he would not have to call a lock out. When workers said they would like to continue to negotiate, Entergy retaliated by sending more than 100 of the 400 workers home: effectively locking out half of workers.
Entergy has called these workers “non-essential.”
We as community allies and trade unionists know that there is no such thing as a non-essential worker in a nuclear power plant. Workers maintain that this plant is the safest in the country when they are working, but question whether scabs would be able to maintain an aging and unfamiliar plant. Entergy, who’s CEO made $18 million last year is jeopardizing our communities in order to squeeze workers out of their health care and job security.
Workers are still in negotiations and are hoping to avoid a total lock out, but want you be ready if the picket lines come up. For more information email jennifer@massjwj.net.
