The Workers’ Right Board was originally formed in 1996 to act as a replacement for the NLRB (National Labor Relations Board). Existing labor laws provides very little protection for workers who are treated unfairly or who try to organize collectively. Clergy, elected officials, and other community leaders came together and committed to supporting the rights of workers to organize a union, demand better treatment at work, and bargain collectively. The Workers’ Rights Board is the moral voice of the community leaders when labor laws fall short.
Over the years the Board was involved with many exciting campaigns and struggle. Some of the ways the Board has helped has been to
- Went on delegations to Boston building owners when janitors were negotiating their new contract
- Took testimony from Boston public librarians who are fighting for better staffing to keep branch libraries open
- Visit employers who fail to pay their workers their wages as part of the Fair Wage Campaign.
Members of this Board add name their to the board member list as a person who is committed to protecting workers rights. There is also a steering committee for this board that meets quarterly.
